Indy’s New Water Charity, Water for Empowerment, to Host Launch Party November 6th

Friday, November 6th, Water for Empowerment is hosting the fundraising event “Agua Nicaragua” to celebrate the organization’s launch and raise awareness. The evening will include dinner, music, dancing and entertainment by Indiana’s Latin musicians El Camaron Electronico and Soundz of Santana. EnviroForensics is corporate sponsor of the event.

Water for Empowerment is an Indiana-based organization dedicated to creating sustainable communities built on clean water and sanitation, with the primary goal of empowering girls and women to build healthy futures through clean water initiatives. Girls in developing nations have the responsibility of obtaining water, which puts them in dangerous situations and keeps them out of school. Water for Empowerment strives to create opportunities for women to become key stakeholders and leaders in the projects while also protecting them from being abducted or sold into the human trafficking industry.

Water for Empowerment has launched a three-year program to support micro-enterprises for teens and young women ages 16 to 30 in the Bilwi Region of Nicaragua through a three-year partnership with WaterAid America. Through the program, young women receive mentorship in business development in addition to jobs training in clean water technologies. The women will be able to build demand for clean water products and services by teaching the community about clean water and hygiene. In addition, they are currently leading crews that are building latrines and repairing water wells.

The organization has recently been recognized as a 501c3 non-profit—a tax-exempt status that allows the organization to collect money or in kind donations for various water projects and acknowledge by written receipt the amount of charitable contribution for tax deductions.

Agua Nicaragua will be held at Bent Rail Brewery in Indianapolis, and each ticket for the event includes:

  • Latin-inspired small plates served in courses throughout the evening
  • A specialty batch Bent Rail brew or custom cocktail
  • A bottle of private-label spring water
  • Reusable shopping bags for pre-holiday shopping in a tented Nicaraguan market

The event will feature a Nicaraguan market, and Liberation Roasting Company will offer coffee tasting from two farms in Nicaragua with Water for Empowerment private label half-pound bags for sale. Agua Nicaragua is the first in a series of events planned to raise money for the three-year partnership with WaterAid.

EnviroForensics’ Steve Henshaw and Greg Zumbaugh are on the board for Water for Empowerment, and Nancy Shields is part of the Event Committee.
